The second episode in our look to Hard Times and what a great way to start off with The Moody Blues and their song written by bassist John Lodge I`m Just A Singer In A Rock N Roll Band. The song’s core message reflects the band’s humility during the 1970s. As Lodge explained, fans and the media often looked to rock stars for profound answers to major issues of the time—such as the Vietnam War and political unrest. Through lyrics like “Don’t ask me, I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band,” the group expressed that they were just everyday people navigating the same world as their audience. Despite the lyrics suggesting they lack the answers to societal problems, the song celebrates music’s ability to bridge seas and bring people together. Next we listen to Our Lady Peace and their song One Man Army. The lyrics contrast fake, superficial people with the speaker’s determination to forge their own path, marching forward alone (“like a one-man army”) to survive past deceits. Sometimes even therapist who appear to be trying to help you are fake so take a deep breath and give what they say some thought before following blindly.
