Featured Artists: Phil Collins, Cake, Chumbawamba

Started todays show with a great song from Phil Collins and his song Take Me Home which is about the perspective of an institutionalized patient, with the lyrics heavily inspired by Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. It explores the theme of alienation and mental confinement, capturing the inmates desperate desire to return to reality and a place of safety. Deep thinking and something we can relate too as sometimes we get trapped in something that makes us feel trapped. Sometimes it is a job, sometimes it is life in general. Music again has those songs which speaks to us and the featured artists in todays show are that.

Ward opens the February 18 show by apologizing for the delayed recording and welcoming Roxy. He invites listeners to request songs in chat. Later, he argues that governments should put money into mental health, takes requests, introduces a country set, and signs off with a wish for good mental health.

About this episode

Ward says he had trouble starting the recording and joined with about two minutes left in Bob Seger’s song. He welcomes Roxy and asks listeners to put requests in the chat room.

After a set he describes as being about corporate greed and people taking advantage of others, Ward criticizes corporate spending and says governments should put money into mental health. He also comments on recent shootings, then returns to music.

Later, Ward reads Oliver’s top five bands, talks through listener requests, introduces a country set and a dance portion, then thanks listeners and wishes them good mental health.

What a great song there by Bob Seger from the album of the same name, Against the Wind. And for those of you that happen to be listening to this on the recording, sorry about the beginning. For some reason, it just would not let me start the recording. So unfortunately, I had to get it going about two minutes left in the song. So really hate to interrupt Bob that way. But technology sometimes, what can you do? I mean, honestly, what can you do? You can only do your best. That's it. It's Wednesday, February 18th. Welcome to the Langdon Auger Show. Roxy's already checked in. So welcome, Roxy. And we're going to be here till 7 p.m. And so if you want to hear anything, let me know. I've already got some songs queued up, ready to go. But we can put your requests in there. Don't worry about that. Just put them in the chat room. Let us know what you think of the show. Let us know if you want to hear a song. Let's just do a little chit-chatting. And let's get right to the show, shall we? How about a little Phil Collins to start us off? it's a good one.

A couple songs there about the corporate greed, religious people that just take advantage of people and just people not really concerned with what is going on in the world, including the orange haired president down below in the southern part of this world. Mental health is, you know, there's much more important things going on in the world than how much you sell, how much product you sell and how much you got to stop doing that. It's just ridiculous how much corporate shill, how many different things they want us to spend money on and they want us to buy the product and this new channel and this and that and this and that. It's getting ridiculous. Just take some of that money and put it into mental health, especially you governments out there that are listening in. You're horrible. You're brutal. Don't care who you are. You're brutal. Stop it. The world needs a cure. You got the money to do it. Let's just do it. I'm stepping down off my soapbox now, but it's getting ridiculous out there. How many shootings have we had in the last week? At least two. You know, and one guy was shooting at people in his own family, but yet you're taking out everybody else that's in there. Bizarre folks, bizarre. Let's get back to some music. Maybe that'll help.

Oh, great tune there from Sweeney Todd. Of course, it's Roxy Roller, a request by Oliver going out to Roxy. And weirdly enough, coincidence maybe, not weirdly, Oliver's granddaughter is called Roxy. That's right. So there you go. It's just a big go-around circle. In before that, we had Matchbox 20 telling us all about the real world. And Tal Backman was in there with She's So High. Welcome to the Langdon Auger Show. We were just about a half hour in. Thank you already. We've got a request. So hopefully we get some more. We have an hour and a half if you do want to hear anything. You know how it works. Just go to the chat box, enter your username, save it, and go down and go, Hey, I want to hear this. If I got it, I'll play it. One of my favorite bands of all times. And I haven't played them in a while, so this is a little bit for me, okay? I'm not going to lie to you. This one's for me.

00:40:00

Of course, that man needs no [unclear]. You know, you don’t need me to tell you who that was.

00:43:39

It's Bob Dylan, right? Of course. Rainy day woman number 12 and number 35. Hello? Just, okay. Everything went blank there for a second, and then I went blank. Pink featuring the Indigo Girls in before that with Dear Mr. President. And Stick started us off with Sweet Madam Blue. Hope you're enjoying the show. We got quite the conversation going on here. We're asking, what's your favorite top five bands? We already heard from Oliver. He's got similar ones to me. Just going to read you off some of his top five. Where are we now? We got to go up here. We got to go up here. Oh, there we are. There we are. We're almost there. Yeah. Okay, so we've got the Guess Who, Black Sabbath, Eagles, Supertramp, and April Wine. Taking them up until the late 70s. And maybe we'll get it later. Another day, we'll get another top five. From the 78 up. We don't know yet. We're still waiting for Roxy's top five. You know, but she'll get to it eventually. Let's continue on with the music. Thanks for tuning in, everybody. Hope you're enjoying the music so far. We're going to kick it off with this one because, of course, we talked about Michael Hutchence just yesterday. And how, you know, we showed his new album and how Bono and Daniel Langlois did such a great job of his album after his death. But INXS was a huge band. Love them very much, so we’re going to play a little INXS.

That's, of course, Jim Kerr and the Simple Minds who always seem to be number two behind U2. Didn't matter what it was. However, they have a great tune that made The Breakfast Club. Do you know what that one's called? Of course you do. Don't you forget about me. U2 is well in there with Where the Streets Have No Name. And we started off with INXS with Need You Tonight. Time to do a little country, I guess. Let's try that one. How about this right off the bat? This will bring you back a few years.

Johnny Cash in there, live track of A Boy Named Sue. And we started off with Alabama. And if you're going to play in Texas, you have to have a fiddle and a band. We are doing great here. We're just after the hour of 6 o'clock. So it's time for our dance portion of the show. So hopefully you're hydrated. Hopefully you're stretched out already for the music that's been playing. It's been danceable, at least chair danceable. We did have a random cheap trick request. So we're going to start that off, this dance portion of our show. So get ready. Stretch it out.

I know it's probably only me, but the sound of brass in a rock and roll song, it just goes. That's me. That's the kinks, and of course, Come Dancing. ABBA in before that, Dancing Queen, and Cheap Trick started off that set with the Magical Mystery Tour, of course, of Beatles 2. And we'll be talking about LSD ever since. That's Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, you sickos. But yeah, the sound of brass is just amazing. So, keeping on with the Beatles theme, it's the walrus's fault. That's all I can say.

Lana Miles with Kickstart My Heart. I heard she's going to come out with a new album. So be prepared. Now, Lana Miles album coming out soon. Not sure when. Just heard that. We had Stone Temple Pilots in there as well with Interstate Love Song. John Lennon started off with Imagine. We're down to a half hour of the show left. We're going to play some songs now that we've had while chatting through. Just different suggestions. So hopefully you enjoy these ones. I know a couple of them you were asking about. So we're going to play those ones. But we're also going to throw in a couple of surprises. And hopefully you'll like it. Like this one.

That is, of course, the Charlie Daniels band. And the devil went down to Georgia, and he even made a second part. I think it's only on one of his live albums. I've been trying to look for it. It's not nearly as good as that version, but it is continuation of the story. Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show in there with the cover of The Rolling Stones. And The Who started that set off with Behind Blue Eyes. Let's keep the music going. A couple more requests.

01:41:51

[Interlude or untranscribed audio.]

01:50:37

Of course, the Rolling Stones, one of my favorite songs of theirs. I think Painted Black and Sympathy for the Devil would probably be number one and number two. That's a close third. Of course, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Chilliwack there as well, Arms of Mary. Stompin' Tom Connors started it all off with Bud the Spud. Got time for one more set. One more request. The $10 song of the night is this one.

01:51:01

02:00:38

Oh, a couple of flower power songs there to end the show with the Lemon Pipers and Green Tambourine. Mash McCann in there as well with As Years Go By. Started all off with April Wine and Roller. That's it for me. Thanks for tuning in. I hope you guys had a good show. I hope you enjoyed the songs we were playing. And a happy mental health to you. We're going to end the show off with Everybody's Talking. Have yourself a good day.
