Todays show started off with a great song from .38 Special. “Hold on loosely” means finding a healthy balance in a relationship giving your partner enough space and freedom to be themselves instead of being overly controlling or smothering. The song warns that being too clingy can cause insecurity and ultimately push the other person away. Johnny Cash did a strip down version of a Depeche Mode song Your Own Personal Jesus. When Cash recorded the stripped-down track in 2002 for his album American IV: The Man Comes Around, he subverted that cynical context entirely. Backed by sparse acoustic guitar and piano, Cash stripped away the original’s electronic, pop-mocking edge. He interpreted the lyrics as a genuine promise to offer the listener the selfless, unwavering devotion of his real Savior. To Cash, the track was essentially an anthem about “lifting someone up” and pointing them toward divine grace and forgiveness. This song makes me a fan of people coping other artist songs. Next we heard a awesome song from Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders and Kid. While the core narrative is a fictionalized story about a working mother, Hynde has stated that her primary inspiration for writing the song came from a male fan who would hang around the soundchecks on their first tour. She has mentioned that she felt a lingering sense of guilt about the last time she saw him—leaving him standing in the snow without ever really having anything to say to him
